Frequently Asked Questions

  • I have spent many years offering spiritual care to individuals and groups and have completed a lot training in that process.

Many people and institutions have been my teachers, and the list of trainings I’ve completed is extensive. Details about all the courses, practicums, and education I’ve undergone can be found on the My Story & Credentials page.

To name just a few things from my training and background: I’ve served as a staffer + care provider in a Zen monastery, multiple Protestant churches, a progressive seminary, and a contemplative practice retreat center. In all of these roles, I was tasked with guiding people of multiple and no faiths in deepening their spirituality while pursuing personal and collective liberation.

All of that said, I am not a keeper of knowledge others don’t already possess within themselves. In all of my work, I view my role as that of a companion and akin to a midwife — one who assists people in further enfleshing and honoring the divinity nested within and beyond them.

  • I humbly (yet fervently) seek to further a specific mission: that of collective liberation and spiritual flourishing for all beings. My work is as much about devotion to the sacred as it is about shifting socio-political systems that deny the inherent divinity of all beings. The support I offer clients is intended to impact private lives as well as entire ecosystems. To read a much fuller version of my mission and vision, visit the Mission & Principles page.

  • I offer 1:1 care, group facilitation, and and more. I also engage in professional partnerships with likeminded people and organizations. To explore my offerings, please see the various items listed in the website menu

Broadly speaking, my work supports people in accessing their inner knowing and inherent divinity. Through compassionate witnessing, deep listening, and thoughtful questions (and teachings in the context of courses), I help people discern how the divine is moving through their lives and how they wish to respond to that movement.

I am not an expert on another’s experience, nor do I dictate solutions, prescribe dogmas, or impose my understanding of a situation onto another. Instead, through intentional inquiry + reflections, my offerings serve as a loving mirror that helps participants to see themselves more clearly. In so doing, I assist them in navigating their Spirit-led journeys with greater love and understanding. From this place, my clients are supporting in building a present and a future they adore with greater purpose and sovereignty.

PLEASE NOTE: My offerings are not equivalent to clinical therapy, medical support, 12 Step recovery sponsorship, pastoral care, coaching, clerical ministry, legal counsel, or financial consulting. My services do not replace any other care modalities you need or choose to work with.

  • No.

Spiritual care should never be framed as a replacement for other forms of care. It can serve as a beautiful complement to all care modalities you need or choose to work with, but it does not, cannot, and is not meant to replace them.

I myself work regularly with a spiritual director, a therapist, a Twelve Step sponsor, a somatic coach, medical providers, and other supportive figures who help me better understand myself (including my relationship to divinity). Each of these individuals / settings offer unique and distinct forms of care, all of which work beautifully together. I encourage people to establish as diverse an ecosystem of support as possible so the whole of who they are is well-tended.

    WHAT MY WORK IS NOT:

    • Therapy or medical care: While spiritual care can be therapeutic, it isn’t therapy and doesn’t replace the support of a therapist (or any other medical or professional provider). There are no “goals,” “treatments,” or “diagnoses” in the care I offer. There is only the witnessing of the divine’s movement in the participant's life and the discerning of what that movement is inviting in them. Questions, rather than answers, take center stage in this processes, and the unknown is considered a generative space along the journey. Intentions and aspirations are certainly welcome but we allow those to shift in light of the divine’s influence on our lives.

    • Pastoral care or spiritual coaching: My offerings are also distinct from chaplaincy, pastoral ministry, and other forms of spiritual leadership or care. For example, I am not a spiritual coach who prescribes a cookie-cutter regimen for you to accomplish a precise goal in xyz number of weeks. That is simply not how spiritual deepening unfurls, in my view. Even in the time-bound or themed containers I hold, there is always ample room for the movement of Spirit to influence the process and the outcome. I am also not ordained and cannot perform the functions of clergy (for example, I do not perform the duties of a Christian pastor, such as presiding over formal baptisms). There is no prescribed dogma associated with the spiritual care I offer and no expectation that participants have (or adopt) particular beliefs or practices. A participant’s journey is unique, and I respect and celebrate this.

    • Legal or financial advice: I never give financial or legal advice because I’m not qualified to offer it.

  • Yes. I have been educated in how to offer trauma-informed care through multiple trainings and various jobs I’ve held, including my spiritual direction practicum, pastoral care education, chaplaincy work, and more.

As someone with a deep, longstanding relationship with trauma, I know from personal experience that discussing certain facets of oneself and one’s experiences can be difficult and triggering, including (and sometimes especially) in a spiritual context. I also know that sharing trauma in the presence of a trusted provider can be profoundly healing when the experience is tended well. I promise to move at the pace of those I meet with, to listen deeply without prying, and to be clear about the care I am (and am not) qualified to offer so participants know what to expect from me. Participants’ needs are central to any care process, and I will work to meet those needs to the best of my abilities. I will also let participants know where my capacities and credentials end to ensure proper support is found elsewhere when necessary.

  • As a neurodivergent, chronically-ill and disabled person, I strive to make my offerings as accessible as possible.

Having virtual sessions over Zoom means we can chat from wherever we’re located (and to be clear, beds and wheelchairs are perfectly wonderful spots to call into a session from! PJs are a great outfit!). I’m more than happy to set up live-transcript during our calls and can meet with cameras off to support folks with visual or sensory processing disorders. Stimming, hand-flapping, rocking, and other such self-soothing behaviors are not considered distracting or inappropriate behaviors in my sessions.

All of my session questionnaires include a section about accessibility needs, so I know exactly what support is require before meeting a client.

Last, but not least: if a client’s disability or illness is so severe that scheduling live sessions isn’t feasible, I offer asynchronous options on a case-by-case basis. If you’re interested in this, email me to discuss possibilities.

  • I offer care to a wide range of people and am very comfortable working with many different folks. I feel particularly well-equipped to work with people who resonate with the following:

Spirituality: As someone who belongs to multiple traditions yet spent much of my life feeling spiritually “homeless” (all of which I expand on in the Lineages and My Story pages), I am comfortable providing care to people of various, numerous, or no spiritual traditions. People who are exploring their spiritual identities or questioning what tradition(s) they belong to are especially welcome.

Gender + sexuality: As someone who is regularly exploring my own gender and sexuality, I enjoy supporting those who are in a similar process of discernment. Queer, nonbinary, trans, gay, lesbian, bi, polyamorous, non-monogamous, asexual, and other folks who hold expansive and resistant gender + sexual identities are seen, celebrated, and welcomed here.

Disability + neurodivergence: As a chronically ill, disabled, neurodivergent person who has benefited from institutionalized medical care and been threatened by that same system, I welcome those seeking spiritual support on their medical and health journeys. As explained above and below, I am not a therapist or medical provider and cannot perform the functions of one. That said, I am passionate about offering spiritual care to those who have been hurt and stigmatized by state, religious, and medical authorities on the basis of their bodies and minds. The disabled, sick, and neurodivergent experiences are sacred in their own right and deserve to be treated as such.

Politics + liberation: I joyfully support those building a world in which all beings are free from oppression (including as white supremacy, capitalism, imperialism, etc.). Those working towards collective liberation, namely leftist activists and anyone who dreams of an equitable world, are enthusiastically supported here.

Liminality: My offerings support people in navigating liminal times — meaning, periods when one reality has ended but the next is not fully formed. We currently reside in a collective liminal space, between the world as it once was and the world as we long for it to be. Many of us are also experiencing liminality on personal levels through gender explorations, evolving identities, grief and loss, or other forms of endings and beginnings. Spiritual care helps us navigate and the liminal and integrate its teachings, and I relish supporting people across and through these threshold times.

  • A relationship centered on providing or seeking spiritual care should never be forced. Feelings of safety and resonance between client and provider are paramount for establishing and sustaining an ethical and fruitful dynamic.

There is never any obligation for a potential client to meet with me, nor is there any obligation for a returning client to continue meeting with me. If a client ever decides that I am no longer the right person for them to work with, I will respect this and help them find another provider to the best of my ability. (Of course, if a client purchased multiple sessions and chooses to discontinue receiving services partway through our agreed timeline, my cancellation policies — which are listed below — apply.)

If for any reason my offerings don’t feel like a good fit for you, either now or in the future, a great resource for finding other spiritual care providers is Spiritual Directors International. Queer Healers is another great resource. Your local area may also have spiritual care centers where you can receive support.

  • I am committed to pushing back against systems that make financial scarcity a reality for so many, but I do not offer sliding scale pricing. This is because my well-being (including my finances) must be well-nourished and thoroughly tended to if I am to be a care provider over the long-term.

That said, I offer the following options to help with cost:

    • Scholarship slots / financial redistribution: when possible, I offer scholarship slots to those whose basic housing, food, and health needs would be negatively impacted by my standard prices. Reach out if you’re interested in either receiving scholarship assistance or contributing to my scholarship fund.

    • Group offerings are a more-affordable way to engage with me. Sign up for the newsletter to learn whenever one opens up.

And in case this isn’t clear: I am not the only person who does this kind of work. You can find many other spiritual care providers at Spiritual Directors International and Queer Healers whose prices might be more accessible to you.

It is paramount that I price my work in a way that reflects the value of my offerings, sustains my business, and supports my health + livelihood. My prices reflect the time I spend face-to-face with a client as well as the preparatory and follow-up work that goes into a session (not to mention the cost of doing business as a sole-proprietor). I’ve seen providers who charge more than me, and others who charge less. I’m sincerely doing my best to walk the line between sustaining myself and my business without shutting the door on folks who aren’t wealthy.

I wish to affirm my belief that financial hardship is unjust. We all deserve to have easy access to resources — including care providers — that support our flourishing. Our governments should guarantee this through healthy social, economic, and political systems. If they can’t or won’t, they are failing their basic obligations to the people. Capitalism and the poverty it ensures is a social, political, and economic failure as much as it is an ethical disgrace. I pray that one day the systems we live within eliminate poverty and offer sustainable abundance to all. Until then, may we challenge oppressive hierarchies + scarcity narratives to help birthe a more equitable world.

  • Some important logistical stuff about working with me include:

    • ZOOM: All sessions occur over Zoom. Be sure to have the app downloaded before our session, a device from which to use it, and stable internet at the time of our session.

    • WHAT TO BRING: There’s no need to bring anything except yourself and your digital device (with Zoom on it). A notebook and pen might be helpful, but it isn’t necessary. You’re also welcome to bring whatever helps you feel grounded and supported.

    • SCHEDULING: Please read and respect my policies surrounding scheduling, rescheduling, cancelling, missing, and arriving late to sessions. These can be found below and are also stated at the time of booking.

    • BOOKING TIPS: To ensure you don’t accidentally miss a session, select the right timezone when booking it and mark your calendar correctly. You will also receive a confirmation email that includes relevant session info, as well as reminder emails + texts in the days prior to an appointment.

    • BUFFER TIME: Scheduling some buffer time before and after sessions can help you fully receive and integrate our discussion, but that’s up to you.

  • Yes! I have been featured on podcasts, in the news, in books, and other places. To get to know me better through such mediums, visit the Media Features page.

Disclaimers & Terms of Service

  • The time I set aside for and spend with clients is sacred. I ask that it be honored as such. Please understand and respect the following:

SCHEDULING: Please only book a session if you fully anticipate keeping it. I completely understand that life happens and scheduling can be tough, but if there’s a good chance you’ll miss, cancel, or reschedule a session due to a chaotic or busy schedule, please wait until conditions are more predictable to book time with me. That way, our session is more spacious, grounding, and beneficial to you. Doing this also respects my time and livelihood and helps other clients get access to my services.

RESCHEDULING: I understand that life happens. Between health needs, shifting responsibilities, and living during times such as these, our schedules can go awry. While I ask that you only book sessions you anticipate keeping, you can easily reschedule via the appropriate link in your confirmation email up to 48 hours before our scheduled time. If you reschedule with less than 48 hours’ notice, I charge a $50 rescheduling fee.

CANCELLATIONS: If you decide you can’t or don’t want to keep a session with me, you can cancel it with the appropriate link in your confirmation email up to 48 hours before our scheduled time and receive a refund. Cancellations made after that will only be reimbursed 50%. If you signed up for a session bundle and you cancel partway through, you will only be reimbursed 50% for the sessions left to complete.

MISSED SESSIONS & RUNNING LATE: If you don’t show up to your scheduled appointment and didn’t notify me in advance of a need to reschedule or cancel, you will not be reimbursed for the session. This is not meant as a punishment; it is an honoring of my time + livelihood. Additionally, if a client is more than 15 minutes late this is considered a missed session. To avoid any of this from happening, make sure you select the correct time zone when booking a session so it shows up correctly in your confirmation email + calendar. I send automated reminder emails and texts in the days before a session, so if you check your messages regularly you will have plenty of notice when a session is approaching.

IF I NEED TO RESCHEDULE: I also respect your time and honor your desire to receive spiritual care. If something unexpected comes up in my life and I need to reschedule an appointment you’ve booked with me, you have the option of canceling and receiving a full refund, or rescheduling the appointment at no cost to you. If this happens within 48 hours of our appointment time and you choose to reschedule, I will also reimburse you $50 (since that’s what I charge clients for rescheduling within 48 hours).

  • As mentioned above in the FAQ section, the spiritual care I offer does not replace therapy, medical support, pastoral/ministerial care, financial advice, or legal counsel. I am not an ordained minister and cannot perform the functions of such a role, including sacraments (for example). My offerings are meant to serve as complements to the other care modalities you need or choose to work with.

Whenever I am unable or unqualified to support someone through something, I will share other relevant, external resources with them. I promise to show up to the best of my abilities and offer the best care that I can while also being honest about where my capacities and credentials end.

Additional support between sessions is not included in the cost of service, but messaging for technical / logistical support is fine. Please also understand that I am not available 24/7 and am not the right person to contact during an emergency. If you are ever in a situation in which you need immediate assistance, I encourage you to reach out to people you trust and organizations that can properly support you. In the US, calling United Way’s national 211 hotline can be a very helpful resource in times of need. Additionally, some non-police / non-carceral care resources can be found here.

  • I only work with people who are 18 years of age and older. If that’s not you, wait until you’ve crossed that threshold, after which point I will gladly meet with you!

  • Because spiritual care touches the deepest parts of us, it can bring up unexpected and sometimes difficult emotions. This is normal and to be expected. I promise to hold space for you as best and as responsibly as I can all throughout our sessions and I will recommend additional, external care resources if and when that seems appropriate. I commit to doing everything I can to ensure your sessions with me are generative and that they help you feel safe, empowered, sovereign, and rooted in your strength and agency. I take my responsibilities as a spiritual care provider seriously and promise to offer you the best care that I can whenever we meet or interact with one another.

Relatedly, as a sovereign adult who is blessed with the sacred gift of agency, you are 100% responsible for any decisions you make or actions you take before, during, and after our sessions. Additionally, while I promise to do everything I can to make our sessions supportive to you, it is your responsibility to name when something isn’t working for you. Naming your needs explicitly and promptly ensures I am fully aware of them, which supports me in making appropriate adjustments quickly so you receive the best care and mentorship possible.

  • One of the beautiful and challenging things about the work I do is that there isn’t a formal body that creates standardized certifications for offering these services. In the United States, spiritual directors, tarot readers, dream workers, and many other types of spiritual care providers don’t need to complete specific trainings to offer services. This allows for incredible flexibility and diversity of services, but also vagueness regarding who practitioners respond to regarding concerns in their practice. As a result, it is essential that I explain how I continue to invest in my growth and how I address missteps in my practice.

I engage in supervisory mentorship and peer-mentorship processes, to ensure I continue to grow in my practice of spiritual care. These settings assist me in learning from mistakes and missteps so I offer increasingly better care over time. Additionally, I work regularly with a therapist, coaches, a Twelve Step sponsor, a spiritual director, and numerous other mentors, all of whom assist me in seeing myself more clearly. When necessary, they also help me address challenges in my professional life.

Every client I meet with is invited to complete an anonymous feedback form to tell me how their session went. For the clients I meet with regularly, I provide repeated opportunities to discuss how our care process is going.

None of this ensures I won’t make mistakes, and I readily acknowledge I am not perfect at what I do (nor do I think perfection is the goal). But this all helps me learn from my missteps and mend that which needs mending.

  • Confidentiality is a crucial part of any spiritual care practice and I take your privacy very seriously.

As mentioned above, I engage in supervisory mentorship and peer-mentorship processes to ensure I continue to grow and remain accountable in my work. In such settings, I sometimes share instances of my work with clients. If I speak about an interaction I had with you in these mentorship contexts, I will remove identifying details to ensure your identity remains anonymous.

That said, please understand that if you express serious intent or plans to harm yourself or someone else during our time together, or if you disclose a situation in which someone in your care is being willfully neglected, I will do what I can to assist all parties in remaining safe or regaining safety. This may include breaching confidentiality to reach out to an emergency contact or connect you with harm-reduction + crisis-response resources in your area. I would do all of this with as much attention to honoring your agency as possible every step of the way, all while prioritizing the safety of everyone involved.

If ever you are in a crisis or emergency situation, I encourage you to reach out to others for support who are equipped to help. In the US, calling United Way’s national 211 hotline is often a helpful resource. Additionally, you can find some non-police / non-carceral crisis response resources here.
